A mentor is not primarily a teacher, supervisor, recruiter, counselor, or therapist. A mentor is a prayerful companion who listens, asks good questions, and helps a participant notice how God may already be working before travel and throughout six months of integration.
The role
Effective mentors bring a growing faith, reliability, cultural humility, respect for the participant’s discernment, and commitment to confidentiality. They encourage without forcing a predetermined vocational outcome.
Before travel
Meeting one gets to know the participant and their hopes and fears. Meeting two deepens discernment during preparation. Meeting three prepares spiritually for departure and reinforces the posture of a learner rather than a helper.
After returning
A first debrief happens within two weeks. Further conversations at two months, four months, and six months explore lasting practices, church response, vocation, gifts, fears, commitments, and one next faithful step.
Privacy and portal
Mentors receive an invitation to a dedicated Mentor Portal. Participant-visible shared notes remain separate from restricted formal reports. Applications, private journals, safeguarding information, and staff records are not exposed publicly.
Pray faithfully. Listen deeply. Encourage without controlling. Discern with humility.
